What is the "AwesomiumProcess.exe" process and why is it running when I play?

Turbine has recently made updates to the browser used in-game by LOTRO and DDO, as well as the LOTRO/DDO store. One of the changes you may notice as a result of these updates is a new process running called "Awesomiumprocess.exe".

If you close this process, the LOTRO/DDO Store and the in-game browser will no longer load correctly and you will need to restart the game in order to correct this. If you notice that the browser or store are not loading correctly for you, make sure that "Awesomiumprocess.exe" is not being blocked by Windows Firewall or any other third-party Firewall or Security software. You will need to add "Awesomiumprocess.exe" to the inbound/outbound Firewall exceptions list in your firewall if this is happening.

To configure your Windows firewall to allow the browser and store to connect to the internet, please take the steps below based on the operating system you are using:

For Windows 7:

  1. Click on the Windows "Start" button
  2. Choose "Control Panel" from the menu
  3. In Control Panel select: "System and Security"
  4. Under "Windows Firewall" select "Add a program through Windows Firewall"
  5. Click "Allow another program" at the bottom
  6. Click "Browse" and navigate to your installation directory
    • For LOTRO this is 'C:\Program Files\Turbine\The Lord of the Rings Online' by default*
    • For DDO this is 'C:\Program Files\Turbine\Dungeons and Dragons Online' by default*
    • For Steam installs, navigate to 'C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common' and then look for the game folder instead*
      * If you see Program Files (x86) listed, click that instead
  7. Scroll through the list until you find AwesomiumProcess.exe, highlight it, and select Open or Accept

For Windows Vista

  1. Click on the Windows "Start" button
  2. Choose "Control Panel" from the menu
  3. In Control Panel select: "Security Center"
  4. Under "Windows Firewall" select "Allow a program through Windows Firewall"
  5. Scroll through the list in the "Programs and Services" list that comes up, looking for AwesomiumProcess.exe
  6. Highlight the process and click Okay

For Windows XP

  1. Click on the Windows "Start" button
  2. Choose "Control Panel" from the menu
  3. In Control Panel select: "Security Center" > "Windows Firewall" and then click the“Exceptions” tab
  4. Scroll through the list in the "Programs and Services" list that comes up, looking for AwesomiumProcess.exe
  5. Highlight the process and click Okay

If you are using a third-party firewall (Zone Alarm, Kaspersky, Norton, AVG, etc.) the steps to add exceptions may be similar to those listed above. Please refer to the maker of your firewall for detailed instructions if needed.
